Grey Wolf 26DBH Holding Tanks …

As most of you know travel trailers usually have three holding tanks: fresh water, grey water, and black water.

Fresh Water  -  The 26DBH fresh water tank holds 46 gallons and is used when you don’t have city water hook-ups.  One gallon of water weighs approximately 8 pounds, something to consider when you are concerned about total weight of your RV.  When full the 26DBH fresh water tank holds about 368 pounds of water.  I only keep about 5 gallons of water in my fresh water tank mainly for flushing the toilet for travel stops.

I suggest you run the fresh water tank near full or near empty.  The fresh water tank does not have baffles to stop liquid surge so a partially filled tank allows the water to move back and forth and could cause trailer sway.

There are plenty of good articles on the internet about how to keep this tank sanitized.

Grey Water – The 26DBH grey water holds 38 gallons of water and catches the run off from the sinks and tub/shower.

Most RVers leave the grey water valve open when hooked up to sewer systems.  I do not.  There is a video out at RVTravel.com that makes perfect sense to me (see the link below).    Run-off from the kitchen sink can have food particles, grease and oils in it.  If the grey water tank is left open these particles and oils can build up on the walls of the grey water tank and could eventually cause odors.  If the tank is left closed and emptied when approximately 2/3 full the oils and food particles will float on top of the water in the tank.  When the tank is drained the draining will create a vortex and the oils and food particles will go down first and then rinsed by the cleaner water.  This does mean that you have to check the tank level more often.  If you do decide to leave the valve open you will need to close it for a while before draining the black water tank.  This allows for rinsing of the sewer hose (The Stinky Slinky).

Black Water – The 26DBH black water tank holds 28 gallons and catches everything that goes down the toilet.  Note:  Do not leave this tank open at sewer hook-ups.  If you do, all the liquids will run off and you will eventually get a very smelly pyramid of solid waste in the bottom of your tank.  Once that hardens if could be impossible to remove.

My black water tank chemical mix is simple.  I use 12 ounces of Campa-Chem® Formaldehyde-free tank deodorant, two caps of Calgon® liquid water softener, and two gallons of water.  The water softener helps keep the tank walls nice and slick to keep anything from sticking.
