Checking For A Hot Skin
Sounds like you are checking to see if you have been in the
sun too long. Nope, it is checking to
see if your RV has a faulty 120 volt electrical current issue that could be
deadly. 120 volt electrical issues could be with the shore power pedestal, a
faulty cord, or a problem with the 120 volts system of your RV.
The minimum you will need is a circuit analyzer, and a non-contact
voltage detector. These come in all
sizes and prices. I personally use the
Camco Power Defender surge protector/Circuit analyzer shown below.
First make sure that the 30 amp breaker is off at the shore
power pedestal. Plug up your circuit
analyzer and turn the power on. Make
sure the lights on your circuit analyzer show that all is good. If you get any other reading than all is
good, do not connect your RV to the pedestal, and notify the campground staff.
If all is good, turn off your 30 amp breaker and connect your RV. (NOTE: DO NOT LET ANYONE TOUCH THE RV UNTIL
THE NEXT STEP IS COMPLETED). Connect
your RV to the circuit analyzer/surge protector and turn on the 30 amp breaker. Hold your non-contact voltage protector close
to the plug until it beeps. This is
telling you your detector is working. Now, touch the frame of your RV, touch
the steps, and touch the hand rail. If
you get a beep you have a “HOT SKIN” situation.
Immediately turn off the 30 amp breaker and leave it off until you find the
source of the problem. This is a very
dangerous situation and could kill you.
If you don’t get a beep, you are good to go. Happy Camping.
If at any time you get an electrical tingle from touching
your RV turn off the power at the pedestal and source out the problem starting
with the steps above.
